Lumbar Decompression

If you’ve ever experienced back pain you know how debilitating it can be. Millions of Americans who have chronic back pain are clamoring for a solution and many of the solutions available involve prescription drugs or surgery. One of the big benefits of spinal decompression therapy is that it provides a non-invasive, medication-free option for people dealing with back pain.

In this article, Dr. Warren is working with Randy, an avid golfer who came in to see us when his hip and back pain prevented him from playing golf. He has been experiencing lower back, hip, and leg pain that had lingered for a few months but had recently gotten worse and was preventing him from partaking one of his favorite activities. Randy’s treatment plan included spinal decompression therapy to relieve pain, core stabilization exercises to strengthen his core, and an adjustment to improve his mobility.

What Is Spinal Decompression Therapy?

Non-surgical spinal decompression therapy is a motorized traction therapy that gently stretches the spine. This results in a change of force and position of the spine which takes the pressure off of the spinal discs or nerves. This greatly benefits people with back pain as they age.

This gentle, non-surgical procedure can provide lower back and neck pain relief, sciatica pain relief, and is a state-of-the-art procedure for bulging, herniated, or degenerative disc disease in the neck and lumbar regions. As you age, the discs that sit between the bones of your spine lose fluid and as a result, your spine compresses and you have less protection between each bone.

The gentle forces of spinal decompression therapy create a decompression of the spine to improve blood flow and nutrient exchange to the injured area. When you have spinal decompression therapy you'll experience several cycles of stretch and relaxation, which graduates to a peak over a period of 15-18 minutes.

Like many chiropractic treatments, spinal decompression therapy is delivered on a table but the difference with this particular therapy is that you’re strapped into a harness that goes around your lower back and everything is computer-controlled by your chiropractor. When your spine is stretched by machine, fluid fills the discs that have been losing fluid which repairs your spinal discs.

Most spinal decompression patients will need to come in for a treatment 3 times a week for 1 month, transitioning from passive to active treatments as you respond, with most patients feeling pain relief with as few as 6-10 treatments. After 8 weeks of spinal decompression therapy, most patients are released. For most patients, we combine spinal decompression with an exercise program that targets the function of the stabilization ligaments, tendons, and muscles. Randy has experienced such drastic improvements because he has committed to doing his exercises at home twice a day and he is seeing the benefits of that work in his improved mobility and reduced pain.

We work with Randy during his exercises to teach him how to build core stability. There are varying levels of these exercises and Randy has built up to the highest level. Diaphragmatic breathing, education, and core stabilization are all very important during those exercises. We focus on extension exercises that also build core strength and increase mobility so that our patients get long-term benefits.

In addition to spinal decompression and core exercises, Randy has an adjustment to improve his mobility. Because Randy has hip pain, Dr. Warren adjusts not just his back and his hips but also his ankles, knees, and neck. This comprehensive chiropractic adjustment combined with exercises and spinal decompression therapy has been able to get Randy back on the golf course doing what he loves.

Clinical results of spinal decompression therapy have been effective in over 75% of the patients treated and most patients find long-term relief or effective management of their pain when they complete the entire program of treatments utilizing the spinal decompression. One of the main benefits of undergoing spinal compression with a chiropractor is that you’ll get a full treatment plan that goes beyond just spinal compression therapy to get you the best results possible.

Benefits of Spinal Decompression Therapy

Most modern humans spend a lot of time sitting and that can lead to the spine compressing, wearing down the spinal discs, and degenerating over time. Decompressing the spine makes the spine less susceptible to this degeneration and breakdown and that’s just one of the benefits of spinal decompression therapy.

Spinal decompression therapy is a non-invasive treatment that doesn’t require any medication and isn’t very time-consuming. It also gets fast results and many patients experience pain relief after their first session. That’s much faster than any kind of spinal surgery and it doesn’t have the recovery time associated with surgery either.

Instead of simply covering up the pain with pain medication, spinal decompression provides natural pain relief by reducing the amount of pressure on the spine. This means that back pain isn’t just covered up for the time a pill lasts, it’s eradicated by dealing with the source of the issue. Not having to worry about addictive painkillers or side effects is one of the major benefits of spinal decompression therapy.

Spinal decompression benefits patients with common issues like sciatica, spinal stenosis, herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, and facet syndrome.  While spinal decompression therapy works for many people, it isn’t a good fit for pregnant women, patients with broken vertebrae or any sort of spinal implant, or patients who have had spinal fusion or a failed back surgery.
