Chiropractor Jeffrey W. Kalkstein D.C.
Dr. Jeff provides chiropractic care for the entire family, and he feels privileged to be able to care for many elite professional athletes, including Baltimore’s Professional Baseball Team. He enjoys relieving pain, restoring function and helping patients to return to their normal daily activities.
Dr. Jeff is passionate about coaching patients about the importance of proper nutrition, sleep, stress-relieving activities, positive mental thoughts, and engaging in regular exercise.
"I have a calling to help others, and that’s what I wake up thinking about every day. That’s what gets me moving and what keeps me focused each day.”
Because of his outstanding reputation, many Baltimore health care providers, medical doctors, dentists and massage therapists refer their patients and clients to the office.
Embarking on a Journey to Chiropractic
Dr. Jeff grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. While he was in high school, he twisted his knee in football practice drills right before the start of his senior year. The orthopedic surgeon he consulted at the University of Pittsburgh told him, “I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is I can fix it. The bad news is you can’t play football this year.” Fortunately, Dr. Jeff consulted a chiropractor for this same injury because, as a result of chiropractic care, he played in every game that year. Dr. Jeff then went on to the U.S. Naval Academy and 10 years of active duty, stationed around the world. Deciding that chiropractic was his calling, he attended and graduated from National College of Chiropractic in Chicago. He remained in the Naval Reserves, retiring as a commander.
Maintaining Strong Family Ties
Dr. Jeff met his wife Megan while working out at the gym when he was stationed in Washington D.C. After graduation, Dr. Jeff collaborated with his brother for a short time in Pittsburgh before deciding to move to Towson, an area that he and Megan had always loved. They are the proud parents of four grown and highly educated children: Blake, Russell, Brittany and Warren. You could say that chiropractic runs through Dr. Jeff Kalkstein’s blood. His three brothers, Thomas, Robert and William, along with two nephews and one niece, are chiropractors as well. Blake, Dr. Jeff’s oldest son, is also a chiropractor. He graduated from Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis, with his Doctor of Chiropractic and a master’s degree in Sports Medicine. His youngest son Warren is halfway through chiropractic college and engaged in the same master’s degree program that Blake went through at Logan.
Expanding His Practice Space
Joining renowned chiropractor Dr. Richard Adolph in 1989, Dr. Jeff has remained to serve Towson area patients ever since. The two worked together for about eight years. Dr. Adolph was one of the most famous chiropractors in Maryland and served as the chiropractor for the Baltimore Colts. Dr. Jeff worked in the same building as Dr. Adolph’s for about 25 years. In December 2010, a few days before Christmas, the building had burned to the ground. “Within two days, we were up and running next door. The incident afforded me the opportunity to create an environment where we could better serve our patients.” In a sense, having the building burn down was a blessing for Dr. Jeff, as it allowed him to expand the practice. His skill set had changed due to all the training he’d gone through over the past 15 years. “We went from having about 1,800 square feet of space to a 4,000 square-foot facility that has allowed us to provide state-of-the-art care.” He, Megan and Blake currently work at the practice. When he graduates from chiropractic college, Warren will join the team.
Engaging in Healthy Habits
Regarding his own health, Dr. Jeff receives weekly chiropractic care and provides care to his family on a regular basis. He and his family also stay fit by exercising regularly. They participate in activities such as swimming, weight training, running, yoga and Pilates. For fun, they enjoy playing tennis as well as snow and water skiing. Megan is a gourmet chef with a master’s degree in Holistic Nutrition, so Dr. Jeff and his family eat an organic, whole food diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, fresh fish, free-range chicken and grass-fed beef. They also supplement with natural multivitamins, D3, pharmaceutical grade Omega-3 (fish oil) and various anti-inflammatory nutrients and spices.
Staying Active Professionally
Dr. Jeff is Board Certified and licensed in the states of Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio. He is a member of the Maryland Chiropractic Association (MCA) and the American Chiropractic Association (ACA). Dr. Jeff sums up his purpose in this way, “We are only here for one reason, and that is to be of service to our patients by providing care that is convenient, affordable and mainstream.” You’re invited to find out how we can best serve your health needs and those of your family and friends by contacting our office. Chiropractor Shackleton Steward D.C.
Dr. Shackleton Steward’s passion for chiropractic medicine came as a result of his deeply-rooted love for rugby. Born in South Africa, where rugby is an incredibly popular sport, Dr. Steward carried his passion for the game with him when he immigrated to the United States at a young age. Later, while team captain on the rugby field at Palmer College, his passion for rugby sparked an interest in treating patients dealing with both acute and chronic pain.
Initially he had no intention of becoming a chiropractor, but after a year or two of listening to his teammates in the program speak passionately about their future career, as well as his own first hand experience with the benefits of chiropractic care, he was hooked. He is incredibly grateful that rugby led him to a career where he is constantly motivated to do the work he loves.
Dr. Steward’s approach to chiropractic, and conservative care as a whole, comes from a desire to implement evidence-based care for his patients in order to reduce pain and restore function quickly and comfortably.
Dr. Steward utilizes research and clinical intuition throughout patient treatment, and his goal is to make each person’s experience with chiropractic care as pleasant and effective as possible. He understands that certain problems only need one solution, while others may require multiple solutions. Dr. Steward has found that at times chiropractic care may be best utilized when conducted in tandem with other modalities such as Dry Needling, Therapeutic Laser, Cold & Heat Treatments, and Corrective Exercise.
As mentioned previously, Dr. Steward was born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa until his family immigrated to the United States when he was 13 years old. He spent the remainder of his childhood in the Tampa Bay Area in Florida, before leaving to pursue college football while studying at Augustana College in Illinois. Later he transitioned over to study Chiropractic at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Iowa, where he graduated with his Doctorate of Chiropractic.
Both Dr. Shackleton Steward’s father and mother were also born and raised in South Africa. His father, Anthony Steward, currently holds the world record for sailing around the world in an open boat - that is to say that he circumnavigated the entire globe in a 19-foot boat without a cabin!
Just as Dr. Steward found in rugby that a person is only as good as their entire team’s effort, he has found that this also applies to chiropractic care. Dr. Steward endeavors to work with his team at Kalkstein Chiropractic in order to give you the very best care imaginable.
