What is Anterior Hip Pain in Towson?

Hip pain is a common symptom that affects all sorts of different people. It is often described as aching, sharp, or burning in the hip area and the pain can range anywhere from mild to severe. You can develop hip pain in different areas of your hip but anterior hip pain is pain specifically felt over the front of the hip or inside of the hip and groin area.

Anterior hip pain is often caused by osteoarthritis, inflammation (including rheumatoid arthritis), tendonitis or muscle and tendon strains, or even a hip fracture.

Osteoarthritis of the hip occurs when the cartilage in and around the hip joint slowly wears down over time. Cartilage breaking down over time is a common side effect of aging but it can also be related to a prior hip injury.

Without an adequate amount of cartilage in the hip joint, the bone can begin to rub together which causes pain. Osteoarthritis pain ranges from dull and aching to very sharp. This type of pain typically gets worse with activity and improves with rest.

Inflammation is a very common cause of anterior hip pain and that can be inflammation of a strained tendon or muscle (particularly a hip flexor strain), tendinitis, or it could be caused by rheumatoid arthritis. Inflammation is at the root of many conditions that cause pain in the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis tends to create a dull, aching pain in the hip area that gets better with activity and worse with too much rest.

Bursitis is an irritation or inflammation of the bursa, the small, fluid-filled sacs that serve as a cushion between joints, muscles, and tendons. One bursa, called the iliopsoas bursa, is found on the inner or groin side of your hip and can cause anterior hip pain if inflamed. Bursitis is most common among runners and soccer players.

Many people associate anterior hip pain with older people, and while many older people deal with reduced cartilage, hip fractures, and arthritis, hip pain is not exclusive to that age group. We commonly see athletes who have anterior hip pain as a result of an injury or a strain. Just because you’re younger, that doesn’t mean anterior hip pain can’t affect you.


How To Improve Anterior Hip Pain In One Session

When Ben came to us, he had been dealing with hip pain for 7 weeks and was hardly able to walk. He was waddling and couldn’t move his leg very much without experiencing sharp pain. The great news for anyone experiencing anterior hip pain is we can improve this quickly, in Ben’s case it was in just one session!

We treated Ben’s anterior hip pain with dry needling which uses a thin monofilament needle to penetrate the skin and treat underlying muscular trigger points or muscle tension, injuries, and pain. This process has been proven to relieve and improve neuromusculoskeletal pain and movement impairments in many patients. This treatment takes about 8-10 minutes and is able to provide immediate relief for many patients.

We showed Ben some hip exercises that he could do at home for a few days until we saw him again. We also adjusted him to release tension in the hip joint. Ben’s pain went from an 8 to a 2 in that one session and he’s able to walk and move again.
